Course Description:
This workshop will explore the therapeutic application of Quickshifts and how these sound tools can be used to quickly shift states of alertness and set up the nervous system for optimal success. Participants will learn about Quickshifts’ theoretical underpinnings such as binaural beat technology, musical entrainment, the encoded movement patterns found in music, and how accessing whole-brain processing further promotes basic and higher-level functions and processes. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to implement the use of Quickshifts into their practice settings and will understand how to select the best musical match between album and client to optimize therapy goals and outcomes. This 2-day workshop presents an evidence-based protocol, which combines a sound-based intervention with sensory integrative activities to create a comprehensive approach that is effective for diverse populations with sensory challenges. Introductory topics will be discussed, moving to in-depth instruction of Advanced Therapeutic Listening™ and Quickshift Therapy.

Who Can Participate:
Occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, physical therapists, psychologists, physicians, educators, special educators, physical educators, and parents. Graduating students or graduate students of the aforementioned fields are also welcome.

What is Therapeutic Listening (TL):
Therapeutic Listening™ is a comprehensive, multi-faceted sound-based approach that involves much more than just the ears. Like other sensory systems, the auditory system does not work in isolation. Neurologically it is connected to all levels of brain function and as a result it has a vast range of influence. How we listen impacts not only our overall physiology, but also our behavior.
Therapeutic Listening™ (TL) is a specific sound-based intervention that is embedded in a developmental and sensory integration perspective. The music in Therapeutic Listening gives the listener unique and precisely controlled sensory information. The music is electronically modified to highlight the parts of the sound spectrum that naturally capture attention and activate body movement, synchronizing it with the environment. Therapeutic Listening uses electronic modifications, along with the organized, rhythmical sound patterns inherent in music, to trigger the self-organizing capacities of the nervous system.
Therapeutic Listening™ is not a listening therapy approach that consists of one program that must be followed in a certain order. The various albums included in Therapeutic Listening can be arranged in a number of different sequences to address a client’s specific clinical picture and goals.
Not only can Therapeutic Listening™ be used independently, it can also be used as a tool to complement other sensorimotor based therapies as part of a sensory diet at home, school, or in the clinic. This listening therapy program offers therapists a broader range of applications, making it appropriate for a greater variety of clientele. Therefore, Therapeutic Listening™ serves as a tool to be used with nearly any sensory-based clinical issue.

Who Can Benefit From Therapeutic Listening?:
Therapeutic Listening™ may benefit a wide variety of individuals of various ages who might exhibit:
• difficulties interacting with peers and limited play skills
• challenges with transitions or changes in routine
• difficulty communicating (both verbal and non-verbal)
• struggles with sleep, bowel and bladder control, and eating
• trouble following directions
• challenges perceiving and navigating space
• poor timing and sequencing of motor skills
• difficulties with irritability, mood
• difficulties with regulating their energy level (i.e. too low arousal or hyperactive)
• postural insecurity (fear of heights, playing on playground equipment)
• abnormal responses to various sensory stimuli (sounds, touch, taste, pain)
• poor praxis and motor planning: coming up with an idea, planning, and completing the task
• difficulty responding to sounds and verbal directions
Many therapists currently trained in Therapeutic Listening™ find it an important addition to their Sensory Integration treatment modalities that can increase the intensity and shorten the duration of treatment.

What are Quickshifts?:
Within the different music albums in TL, Quickshifts (QS) music albums is one the most advanced sound tools that Sheila Frick has developed.
One of their most unique qualities is that these sound tools incorporate the understanding of auditory-motor entrainment and binaural beat technology to influence neuronal communication, behavioral states, and specific targeted outcomes. The music within each Quickshift album has not only been selected based on unique musical qualities but has also been carefully sequenced to optimize its therapeutic benefits. Finally, unlike some therapy tools, Quickshifts have the capacity to produce immediate changes in performance and function.

Goals:
Upon completion the participants will:
• get acquainted with the historical development of Therapeutic Listening™ techniques
• understand the anatomy and neurophysiology of hearing and listening
• understand the theoretical reasoning of the development of Therapeutic Listening™ and assessment strategies
• know Listening techniques combined with techniques for posture and breathing as well as the Sensory Diet with emphasis on the importance of the function of music and modulated music
• Distinguish between the different types of music and electronic alterations
• Modify listening programs to meet individual client need
• Learn how to integrate a variety of auditory interventions in existing listening and sensory integration programs
Assessment videos, treatment planning and patient case discussion of various ages and diagnoses will be utilized. The tools and materials used in this seminar are specifically designed for the treatment of children and adults with sensory integrative dysfunction and sensory regulation dysfunction.

Tuition:
Please refer to registration form. Tuition includes a manual (in Greek or English) and coffee breaks. No lunch will be provided. Other materials such as music chips, chip players, special headphones, books, etc. are not included in the tuition and maybe available for purchase at the seminar site. Although it is not mandatory, it is highly recommended that the participants are familiar with the principles and treatment approach of sensory integration. For follow-up, it is also highly recommended that the participants purchase the book «Listening with the Whole Body: Clinical Concepts & Treatment Guidelines for Therapeutic Listening™ ». The sponsor will offer the special discount rate of 70€ per book (which can be pre-purchased via registration form. Regular rate is: 80€)
